Welcome to the SUGIYAMA Lab.

Each organism retains biological characters by the characteristic expression of their genes. For example, E. coli. bacterial genome encodes 4400 proteins approximately. Human genome encodes 39400 proteins. The hole genome sequencing of an organisms was not easy in 1990's. It took years to complete the sequenceing. Now, new technology has enabled to unveil the secret of blueprint of an organisms within a day. It is required to analyze each gene function and discover the role of gene in an organismal life time. These research will  be useful for our understanding on genome and be served for applied researches.

There are many genes to be utilezed in the development of new medicine, the new method of protection from eviromental polution and the new energy production from biomass. and so on. However, the most of gene functions remaines elucidated. Our laboratory aim to discover a novel gene which is useful.

We respect the presence of each organism in our planet. They have not only common genes but also unique genes which are characteristic to the organisms. Among these genes, some genes would be useful for applilcations aiming to improve human life.

We are interested in canncer cell, planarian and Flexivirga alba ST13T. For cancer cell research, we developed a novel screening system for RNA interference using artificial sequences. Using the system, we discovered a new gene which involved in endplasmic reticulum-induced mitochondria mediated apoptotic cell death pathway. For planarian research, we have special interest in regeneration and oxidative stress. We succeded in the development of model animal which showed decrease in the coenzyme Q level following tissue homeostasis imparments. F. alba. ST13T is a novel microorganism in both genus and species levels which we fonnd in soil.  The bacterium has a character of detoxifying hexavalent chromium. Although the target genes of our insterest diverse, our goal is to contribute to the development of new biotechnology.

Thus, our laboratory is a biotechnology lab.
