As expected, challenger Hirose plays his favorite Shikenbisha Anaguma opening. He won
the first game of this Oi match with it, so there is no reason to change. The question
was what Fukaura would play against this opening. He picks the unusual 17.B6f strategy.
This seems to aim at an edge attack, but the real meaning is to exchange the pawns on
the 8th file, then retreat the bishop to 5g and use the extra pawn for a break through
on the second file with P2d Px2d P*2c. If white defends against this with R2b, black can
try to break through with Bx2d later.

31.B8d-5g 00:41:00 01:26:00
32.R4b-2b 00:41:00 01:26:00
This defends against the break-through on the second file, but leaves white with a very
passive position. Hirose admitted after the game that he was surprised by Fukaura's
opening strategy. He said that he often had this strategy played against him in his
Shoreikai days and that he was kind of playing the opening while trying to remember
those games. Fukaura was happy that his opening strategy was so successful, but he was
well aware that his king was much less well-protected than the white king, so that he
had to be very careful.
33.P9f-9e 00:41:00 01:26:00
It is tempting to drop the pawn on 8d, creating a strong foothold for the attack at the
most vulnerable point of the Anaguma on 8c. However, in this position this would be a
mistake, because black cannot keep the pawn there after B5a followed by S7c.

40.P*8c 01:41:00 02:45:00
41.P3f-3e 02:13:00 02:45:00
The sealed move and a first-time experience for Hirose. He said that it was an odd
feeling to be the only one who knows what the next move will be.

71.R3ex3d 04:28:00 05:31:00
72.N*8f 04:28:00 05:32:00
Looks like a premature move and after the game Hirose admitted as much, but he also
added that it was a move that was "just like me". Vulnerable as this knight may be,
this check is forcing the king into far more dangerous territory.
73.K7h-6i 05:02:00 05:32:00
74.B4b-5c 05:02:00 05:54:00

79.P*3c 05:49:00 06:03:00
80.L3ax3c? 05:49:00 06:04:00
Despite a bad opening, Hirose has done very well to keep the game close. However,
here he misses his only chance to make the position very difficult. Correct was 80.B7a
because 81.S4c+ G6d-6c P*8g fails to B*6a and black cannot save the promoted silver on
4c. Hirose said after the game that he didn't see B*6a at the end of this variation.
81.S4dx3c+ 05:52:00 06:04:00
82.B*5b 05:52:00 06:04:00
83.L*4c! 06:32:00 06:04:00
Hirose underestimated this move. It is not an easy move to play, because the lance has
so little space to move, but here it works perfectly.
84.N2ax3c 06:32:00 07:00:00
85.R3dx3c+ 06:32:00 07:00:00
86.S*3b 06:32:00 07:00:00
This looks good for white, but...
87.+R3c-4b! 06:33:00 07:00:00
Giving up the rook here looks very dangerous with the king on the back rank, but
Fukuara has judged it correctly.
88.B5cx4b 06:33:00 07:00:00
89.L4cx4b+ 06:33:00 07:00:00
90.B5b-6c 06:33:00 07:00:00
The dangerous looking check 90.R*8a fails to 91.B*7a and black threatens to take
the knight on 8f with P*8g, followed by picking up the rook with K7h.
91.P*8g 06:44:00 07:00:00
92.S3b-3c 06:44:00 07:07:00

96.P3fx3g+ 07:00:00 07:13:00
97.S4hx3g 07:05:00 07:13:00
98.P5f-5g+ 07:05:00 07:38:00
99.G5hx5g 07:05:00 07:38:00
100.R*4i 07:05:00 07:38:00
101.K6i-7h 07:08:00 07:38:00
102.N*8d 07:08:00 07:38:00
103.B*5c 07:18:00 07:38:00
104.N8dx7f 07:18:00 07:38:00
105.B5cx6d+ 07:19:00 07:38:00
106.N7fx8h+ 07:19:00 07:38:00
107.K7hx8h 07:19:00 07:38:00
108.S*7i 07:19:00 07:38:00
It looks like Hirose is grasping at straws here, but he is actually doing a great
job at pestering the black king and at the same time not giving his opponent an
easy route to his king.
109.K8h-7h?! 07:22:00 07:38:00
A small mistake that makes the game a little too close for comfort. Things would
have been easy after 109.K9h and after 110.Sx6h= the drop 111.N*7c is very painful
because after 112.Sx7c Nx7c+ Gx7c +Bx7c the white king cannot be defended while
there is no mate against the black king.
110.S7ix6h+ 07:22:00 07:38:00
111.K7hx6h 07:22:00 07:38:00
112.R4ix9i+ 07:22:00 07:38:00
113.P5e-5d! 07:26:00 07:38:00
Closing out the bishop is the right way to victory. Tempting is 113.G5f to open the
escape route up the board for the king, but then 114.B2g+ turns the bad bishop into
a strong horse that works both in attack and defense.
114.P7d-7e 07:26:00 07:51:00
115.+B6d-5e 07:37:00 07:51:00
Again very cool play by Fukaura. Forcing the promoted rook to the other side of the
board makes his king almost impossible to attack.
116.+R9ix1i 07:37:00 07:57:00
117.N8ex9c+ 07:46:00 07:57:00
118.S8bx9c 07:46:00 07:57:00
119.S*9b 07:46:00 07:57:00
120.K8a-7a 07:46:00 07:57:00
121.G5g-5f 07:46:00 07:57:00
Now white has no way to attack the black king. Game over.
122.L*5a 07:46:00 07:59:00
123.N*5c 07:49:00 07:59:00
124.G7b-8b 07:49:00 07:59:00

134.G8bx9c 07:55:00 07:59:00
135.S*7c 07:55:00 07:59:00
Resigns 07:55:00 07:59:00
Mate after 136.K7a P*7b Rx7b (Bx7b Sx8b= etc.) Sx7b+ Bx7b S8a+ Bx8a R*6a K7b P*7c
K8b R6b+ etc. Good comeback victory for Oi Fukaura after unexpectedly dropping the
first game of this match. Hirose will be disappointed with his opening play, but after
that he played very well, which is something he can take to the next game, in which
he has the black pieces again.
