This year the Computer Shogi Association (CSA) organised the World Computer Shogi Championships for the 9th time. From its modest start with only six programs in 1990, it has become a major event on the shogi calendar. For one thing, the results are decisive for the sales of the programs that are available commercially. Fortunately, even though a lot of money is at stake, there is always a friendly (but tense) atmosphere.

The Tournament Hall

There was also a small increase of the number of foreign programs. This year there were four foreign entries. Frontrunner was of course the program Shotest by English programmer Jeff Rollason, which ended third in last year's tournament. My program Spear had not fared as well last year and had to start from the bottom of the qualification. The new foreign entry was the program Shocky by the Fin Pauli Misikangas. He was not able to come to Tokyo, but his program was operated by the Englishman Steve Nichols from Multishell, the company that is planning to issue a commercial version of the Shocky program in the near future. The final foreign entry was Silver Shogi, made by a North Korean company called KCC. This company also made Silver Igo, a strong Go program and therefore it was expected that Silver Shogi might do very well.

This meant that some of the programs had to play almost non-stop from 8:30am until after 9:00pm. Having the rule that all programs had to be able to play by serial cable made the schedule a little easier, since all that the programmers had to do was to start up the game, sit back and relax (if possible). Surprisingly, there were almost no problems with the serial connection; the code provided by the CSA worked very well. It also turned out that most of the programs used much less time that the maximum of 20 minutes for the first qualification round and 25 minutes for both the second qualification round and the finals. Still, the general feeling was that the schedule might be a little hard and the CSA will probably change the tournament system next year. Adding a third day to the tournament is a possibility.

Most of the eyes in the qualification round were of course on Silver Shogi. It did as well as was expected, clearing the first qualification round with a perfect 5-0 score.

The Finnish program Shocky was a positive surprise. It started with three wins and would have qualified for the next stage if there had not been a bug in the time control, which made it lose against my program Spear in the fourth round. When Shocky was running out of time, Spear had a very bad position and I might have considered accepting a draw if that would not have ended all my hopes for qualification. Unfortunately both Shocky and Spear lost in the final round, which meant that Shocky ended sixth and Spear ended seventh, just outside the five qualification spots.

Explaining the inexplicable. What makes Shotest so strong?

Just trying each other out? YSS and Kakinoki Shogi in the qualification round.

The happiest man around on this day was without doubt Yoshimura, the programmer of Eisei Meijin. Last year he missed the finals by one SOS point and this time it seemed for a long time that history would repeat itself. If Kakinoki Shogi would have lost against Silver Shogi and Tanchou would have won, then Eisei Meijin might again have missed the final. Yoshimura, who needed to get to the final to help his company which has been hit hard by the Asian recession, let out a cry of joy when Silver Shogi lost on time.

A happy man: Yoshimura's Eisei Meijin (l) qualifies for the finals.

The final program to clear the qualification rounds was Silver Shogi. This was a big surprise, since it is a first time entry and now and again gave the impression that there were some important problems with the program. For example, in the game against S1.4 there seemed to be an error in the serial connection, leading to an illegal move. After long discussions with the arbiters, who were unable to spot the exact problem, the S1.4 team lead by Professor Noshita generously allowed the move to be taken back and play to continue. Silver Shogi also had problems with time control, running out of time against both Hyper Shogi and Kakinoki Shogi. However, despite these problems and a strange playing style in the opening and early middle game, it was a program that avoided obvious mistakes and was very hard to beat. This would become clear on the second day.

Disappointing was the result of Morita Shogi. This program has been in the finals since the computer shogi championships were first held in 1990. It won the second tournament, was runner-up once and finished third in four tournaments. It might be that Morita's recent wedding interfered with the tournament preparations.

Professionals at work. Mushano (l) and Katsumata (r) explaining the games

Following Shotest from the best seat in the house.

It was also clear that Kanazawa Shogi would do very well. The program is a legend in computer shogi. It did not participate in the first tournament, but won four of the other tournament and got second place three times. Never getting lower than second place is an amazing record. YSS would of course also be a contender based on its perfect performance in the qualification. Kakinoki Shogi and Eisei Meijin were expected to fight for the important third place, which would mean automatic qualification for next year's finals. Silver Shogi and Sougin were not expected to win many games.

There was one big upset in the first round: YSS lost to Eisei Meijin. In the second round Eisei Meijin again beat a favourite: IS Shogi. Eisei Meijin finally fell in the third round at the hands of Kanazawa Shogi. Kanazawa Shogi was the only program with three wins after three rounds, since Silver Shogi caused a major upset by beating Shotest. YSS lost again, this time to Kakinoki Shogi and that seemed to end all hopes for a tournament victory. However, in round 4 YSS beat Kanazawa Shogi straight from the opening and things were suddenly unclear again. After round 4, IS Shogi, Kanazawa Shogi and Shotest (bouncing back by beating Eisei Meijin from a lost position), were leading with 3-1. These three programs were followed by YSS, Eisei Meijin and Kakinoki Shogi with 2-2.

Again no tournament victory. Kakinoki during the game against Silver Shogi.

Round 6 saw IS Shogi dropping out of the lead with a loss against YSS. Also, the Shotest hopes of a tournament victory were ended with a crushing defeat against Kanazawa Shogi. So, with one round to go, Kanazawa Shogi was leading with a 5-1 score. IS Shogi and YSS followed with 4-2; Shotest, Eisei Meijin, Kakinoki Shogi at 3-3; Silver Shogi at 2-4; and Sougin at 0-6. Kanazawa Shogi seemed to be in a very good position, but the tournament rules stated that in case of a tie the total number of wins of defeated opponent's would decide the winner. This meant that there were actually three programs that could still win. If Kanazawa Shogi would win the final game against IS Shogi, it would be the clear winner of the tournament. If IS Shogi would win, the winner would depend on the result of the game between YSS and Shotest. If YSS would win that game, it would win the tournament. If Shotest would win, IS Shogi would be the overall winner. The stage was set for an exciting final round.

Still safe to play the computer. Katsumata makes sure following a YSS game

So, Kanazawa Shogi extended its brilliant record in the World Computer Shogi Championships by becoming champion for the fifth time. Second place was for YSS. Shotest surprisingly managed to clinch the coveted third spot. It had the same SB score as Eisei Meijin, but had won the head-to-head. Shotest will therefore be automatically qualified for the finals again next year. Yoshimura was a little disappointed that Eisei Meijin did not get third place, but he must be happy with the overall result of his hard work. The real disappointment was in the IS Shogi camp. They came very close to winning the tournament for the second year in a row, but had to settle for fifth place in the end. This shows how close the tournament was this year. Silver Shogi proved itself as a potential challenger in the coming years with a 3-4 score, edging Kakinoki Shogi for sixth place. Sougin ended last, not able to win a single game, despite having good chances in most of its games.

The winner. Kanazawa extends his brilliant tournament record.

It is hard to evaluate the absolute strength of the programs, since they still play quite a number of ``computer'' moves. However, I think it takes at least a strong 1-dan player to beat the strongest programs. That being said, there is still a lot of room for improvement and the programs get a lot stronger every year. This year, the Eisei Meijin program had prepared a special sacrifice attack in the middle game, which was very successful. Adding knowledge about good attacking formations and how to use them might be very interesting. Also, automatic preparation of the opening book might improve the programs considerably. Shotest already did that for this tournament by playing more than 40,000 games on 12 machines to automatically spot weaknesses in the opponent's piece development.

In his final speech, Shukan Shogi editor Kosaku even said that the programs might have improved by three handicap levels in the past year. This might be a little too much, but I have been closely following Shotest for two years now and I know that the program has improved a lot since last year. In last year's tournament I commented the games of Shotest without looking at the variations and evaluation it produced. This year I paid more attention after noticing a couple of times that Shotest evaluation and variations were more accurate than my own analysis. If a program that is so much better than last year can only manage to get the same result, this means that the other programs have improved a lot as well.

Last year I was a little pessimistic about the strength of the top programs. I am now pretty sure that strong amateur level is within reach of the current programming methods. It is unclear how far beyond that it is possible to go. Most of the top programmers do not want to make a prediction on the date when a computer program will beat the world champion or predict a date far into the future (I heard 2050 mentioned a couple of times). I am impressed with the improvement in playing strength every year. The CSA World Computer Championships is clearly pushing the programmers. How high will the bar be next year?
