This year the Computer Shogi Association (CSA) organised the World Computer Shogi Championships for the 9th time. From its modest start with only six programs in 1990, it has become a major event on the shogi calendar. For one thing, the results are decisive for the sales of the programs that are available commercially. Fortunately, even though a lot of money is at stake, there is always a friendly (but tense) atmosphere.

The Tournament Hall

This year the number of participants again increased over last year. For a while it even looked like the tournament would clear the magic number of 50 participants. Unfortunately, in the weeks before the tournament the number of entries, which had started at 54, dropped quickly and in the end there were 40 programs participating. Still, this was five more than last year, making this the biggest computer shogi tournament ever. Most notable absentee was the program M-Brain, which reached the finals last year, beating the strong Kanazawa Shogi.

There was also a small increase of the number of foreign programs. This year there were four foreign entries. Frontrunner was of course the program Shotest by English programmer Jeff Rollason, which ended third in last year's tournament. My program Spear had not fared as well last year and had to start from the bottom of the qualification. The new foreign entry was the program Shocky by the Fin Pauli Misikangas. He was not able to come to Tokyo, but his program was operated by the Englishman Steve Nichols from Multishell, the company that is planning to issue a commercial version of the Shocky program in the near future. The final foreign entry was Silver Shogi, made by a North Korean company called KCC. This company also made Silver Igo, a strong Go program and therefore it was expected that Silver Shogi might do very well.

Qualification Rounds

With so many programs participating, the CSA had some serious problems to find a good formula to fit the tournament in two days. In the end they had decided to leave the round robin final tournament of eight programs on the second day intact. To get from 40 programs to 5 final entries on the first day (the three best programs from last year: IS Shogi, Kanazawa Shogi and Shotest were automatically qualified for the finals), a very tough playing schedule was chosen for the first day. There would be two qualification stages. In the first qualification round all new entries and a few of last year's entries would play a five round Swiss tournament. The top five programs would qualify for the next qualification round. This second qualification round would be a seven round Swiss tournament with the top five programs qualifying for the finals on the second day.

This meant that some of the programs had to play almost non-stop from 8:30am until after 9:00pm. Having the rule that all programs had to be able to play by serial cable made the schedule a little easier, since all that the programmers had to do was to start up the game, sit back and relax (if possible). Surprisingly, there were almost no problems with the serial connection; the code provided by the CSA worked very well. It also turned out that most of the programs used much less time that the maximum of 20 minutes for the first qualification round and 25 minutes for both the second qualification round and the finals. Still, the general feeling was that the schedule might be a little hard and the CSA will probably change the tournament system next year. Adding a third day to the tournament is a possibility.

First Qualification Round

The tournament was opened at 8:00am by the chairman of the CSA, Professor Kotani of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. The Japanese Shogi Federation was represented by Ouchi, a 9-dan professional.

Most of the eyes in the qualification round were of course on Silver Shogi. It did as well as was expected, clearing the first qualification round with a perfect 5-0 score.

The Finnish program Shocky was a positive surprise. It started with three wins and would have qualified for the next stage if there had not been a bug in the time control, which made it lose against my program Spear in the fourth round. When Shocky was running out of time, Spear had a very bad position and I might have considered accepting a draw if that would not have ended all my hopes for qualification. Unfortunately both Shocky and Spear lost in the final round, which meant that Shocky ended sixth and Spear ended seventh, just outside the five qualification spots.

The programs that went through to the next qualification round were Sakura, Silver Shogi (both with 5-0 scores), Deep Purple, M-R (both 4-1) and Nazoteki Dengi (3-2 with the highest sum of opponents score). All except the last program were first time entries. I was quite impressed by the Sakura program, which blew away Spear straight from the opening.

Second Qualification Round

The second qualification round was used to decide the five programs that would join the three seeded programs IS Shogi, Kanazawa Shogi and Shotest. In this second qualification round also three formers winners of the tournament, YSS (1997), Morita Shogi (1991) and Eisei Meijin (1990). YSS was the hot favourite to qualify for the finals, since its commercial version AI Shogi 3 is the strongest commercial shogi program on the market. For some strange reason it only ended in fifth place last year. An unexpected fluke that might have been caused by some tuning errors in the final build-up to last year's tournament. YSS performed as expected and qualified for the finals without losing a single game. Two years ago YSS also came from the preliminary rounds and remained undefeated throughout the tournament. Would this year be the same scenario?

Photo 3
Just trying each other out? YSS and Kakinoki Shogi in the qualification round.

Another program that was frequently talked about before the tournament was Kakinoki Shogi. This program has been in all the finals since 1990, has been runner-up four times, but has never taken first place. The commercial version of the program was also considered very strong and most other programs had big trouble getting a good winning percentage against it in test games. Kakinoki Shogi cleared the qualification with a very good looking 6-1 score, but it was already clear that the program was not as strong as expected. Against Eisei Meijin and Silver Shogi the program had a position that was clearly lost. Against Silver Shogi it even needed a problem with the time control of the first year program to finally win the game on time in a lost position.

The happiest man around on this day was without doubt Yoshimura, the programmer of Eisei Meijin. Last year he missed the finals by one SOS point and this time it seemed for a long time that history would repeat itself. If Kakinoki Shogi would have lost against Silver Shogi and Tanchou would have won, then Eisei Meijin might again have missed the final. Yoshimura, who needed to get to the final to help his company which has been hit hard by the Asian recession, let out a cry of joy when Silver Shogi lost on time.

Photo 4
A happy man: Yoshimura's Eisei Meijin (l) qualifies for the finals.

The fourth program to get to the finals was Sougin. This was a bit of a surprise, since the program did not give the impression to be improved much over the version that entered last year. It might have had some advantage because of the pairing system used, since it did not meet any of the top three programs. I think the pairing system might be a discussion point for next year's tournament as well.

The final program to clear the qualification rounds was Silver Shogi. This was a big surprise, since it is a first time entry and now and again gave the impression that there were some important problems with the program. For example, in the game against S1.4 there seemed to be an error in the serial connection, leading to an illegal move. After long discussions with the arbiters, who were unable to spot the exact problem, the S1.4 team lead by Professor Noshita generously allowed the move to be taken back and play to continue. Silver Shogi also had problems with time control, running out of time against both Hyper Shogi and Kakinoki Shogi. However, despite these problems and a strange playing style in the opening and early middle game, it was a program that avoided obvious mistakes and was very hard to beat. This would become clear on the second day.

Disappointing was the result of Morita Shogi. This program has been in the finals since the computer shogi championships were first held in 1990. It won the second tournament, was runner-up once and finished third in four tournaments. It might be that Morita's recent wedding interfered with the tournament preparations.

The Finals

The round robin tournament on the second day between the best eight programs was played under much more relaxing circumstances. The first round started at 9:40am, and with only eight teams left, there was not so much carrying around of big computers going on. The games of the finals were commented by the professionals Mushano (6-dan) and Katsumata (4-dan). Also, Kosaku, editor of the weekly Shogi magazine Shukan Shogi and a top amateur player, gave comments on the games. The tournament is drawing more spectators every year, leading to big crowds around the monitors. It is therefore a bit unfortunate that most programmers did not put some more effort in the user interface (perhaps trying to hide their programming secrets?). An exception was Kanazawa Shogi which had a large screen with big pieces that made it easy to watch the game even from a distance. Since there were only two of the four games commented on the demonstration boards, this was a great service to the spectators.

Photo 5
Professionals at work. Mushano (l) and Katsumata (r) explaining the games

I followed the finals with the Shotest program, explaining the game in progress to Jeff Rollason, who is only a beginner at the game. Since the commercial version of the program (called Otosan2) was not very strong, Shotest was not considered to be a favourite in this tournament. However, I knew that the program had improved a lot since last year and might actually have a chance to become the first non-Japanese winner this time. Last year Shotest was one of the surprises of the tournament and there was no pressure. This year would be much different.

Photo 6
Following Shotest from the best seat in the house.

This was also true for IS Shogi, the program made by a team of students from the prestigious Tokyo University, which won the tournament last year. The commercial version of the program also did not come close to the strength of last year's tournament version. Furthermore, the team had been geographically split up, with team leader Tanase quitting Tokyo University to work full-time at the program, team member Nagai leaving the team and Kishimoto also leaving Tokyo University to write his master's thesis at another university. They too had to deal with the pressure of being favourites instead of underdogs. They made no secret of needing last minute preparations, which were carried out in the tournament hall during the qualification rounds.

It was also clear that Kanazawa Shogi would do very well. The program is a legend in computer shogi. It did not participate in the first tournament, but won four of the other tournament and got second place three times. Never getting lower than second place is an amazing record. YSS would of course also be a contender based on its perfect performance in the qualification. Kakinoki Shogi and Eisei Meijin were expected to fight for the important third place, which would mean automatic qualification for next year's finals. Silver Shogi and Sougin were not expected to win many games.

There was one big upset in the first round: YSS lost to Eisei Meijin. In the second round Eisei Meijin again beat a favourite: IS Shogi. Eisei Meijin finally fell in the third round at the hands of Kanazawa Shogi. Kanazawa Shogi was the only program with three wins after three rounds, since Silver Shogi caused a major upset by beating Shotest. YSS lost again, this time to Kakinoki Shogi and that seemed to end all hopes for a tournament victory. However, in round 4 YSS beat Kanazawa Shogi straight from the opening and things were suddenly unclear again. After round 4, IS Shogi, Kanazawa Shogi and Shotest (bouncing back by beating Eisei Meijin from a lost position), were leading with 3-1. These three programs were followed by YSS, Eisei Meijin and Kakinoki Shogi with 2-2.

Photo 7
Again no tournament victory. Kakinoki during the game against Silver Shogi.

In round 5 leaders IS Shogi and Shotest played to stay in the championship race. It was a long struggle, with Shotest having an overwhelming position for most of the game. However, IS Shogi kept wriggling for counter chances and finally succeeded to find a hole in the Shotest defence. Kanazawa Shogi beat Kakinoki Shogi with a nice mate that was 21 moves long, surprising the commenting professionals since the game was over in a flash while they were still discussing which side had the better position. Silver Shogi showed that it deserved to be in the finals by beating Eisei Meijin.

Round 6 saw IS Shogi dropping out of the lead with a loss against YSS. Also, the Shotest hopes of a tournament victory were ended with a crushing defeat against Kanazawa Shogi. So, with one round to go, Kanazawa Shogi was leading with a 5-1 score. IS Shogi and YSS followed with 4-2; Shotest, Eisei Meijin, Kakinoki Shogi at 3-3; Silver Shogi at 2-4; and Sougin at 0-6. Kanazawa Shogi seemed to be in a very good position, but the tournament rules stated that in case of a tie the total number of wins of defeated opponent's would decide the winner. This meant that there were actually three programs that could still win. If Kanazawa Shogi would win the final game against IS Shogi, it would be the clear winner of the tournament. If IS Shogi would win, the winner would depend on the result of the game between YSS and Shotest. If YSS would win that game, it would win the tournament. If Shotest would win, IS Shogi would be the overall winner. The stage was set for an exciting final round.

Photo 8
Still safe to play the computer. Katsumata makes sure following a YSS game

YSS against Shotest was the first game to finish. It was a strange game in which YSS lost a silver for a knight very early on. After that, both programs played some strange moves, surprisingly most of these were played by YSS. In the end, Shotest won quite comfortably. This meant that the winner of the 9th World Computer Shogi Championships would be the winner of the game between Kanazawa Shogi and IS Shogi. This game will probably become one of the famous games in computer shogi. It certainly was the best fight I have seen two programs play and was literally decided in the final seconds. Like in the game against Shotest, IS Shogi was again in big trouble for most of the game, but managed to hang in there and make things very difficult. It took a lot of moves and a lot of time to make progress and Kanazawa Shogi was getting dangerously close to the maximum time limit of 25 minutes per game. It even entered the stage where only three seconds per move was taken, allowing almost no time for search. Even so, it managed to get to the opponent's king and create a mating threat against which there was no defence. IS Shogi recognised this and resigned with Kanazawa Shogi having only 34 seconds left! Kanazawa is always following the games of his program tense but stoic, but this time I saw him celebrating his victory openly.

So, Kanazawa Shogi extended its brilliant record in the World Computer Shogi Championships by becoming champion for the fifth time. Second place was for YSS. Shotest surprisingly managed to clinch the coveted third spot. It had the same SB score as Eisei Meijin, but had won the head-to-head. Shotest will therefore be automatically qualified for the finals again next year. Yoshimura was a little disappointed that Eisei Meijin did not get third place, but he must be happy with the overall result of his hard work. The real disappointment was in the IS Shogi camp. They came very close to winning the tournament for the second year in a row, but had to settle for fifth place in the end. This shows how close the tournament was this year. Silver Shogi proved itself as a potential challenger in the coming years with a 3-4 score, edging Kakinoki Shogi for sixth place. Sougin ended last, not able to win a single game, despite having good chances in most of its games.

Conclusions

The World Championships Computer Shogi get more interesting every year. This time around there were seven programs which had a chance of beating each other. In the end it looked like a comfortable victory for Kanazawa Shogi, but if the results of the final round would have been different, it might even have ended in third place.

It is hard to evaluate the absolute strength of the programs, since they still play quite a number of ``computer'' moves. However, I think it takes at least a strong 1-dan player to beat the strongest programs. That being said, there is still a lot of room for improvement and the programs get a lot stronger every year. This year, the Eisei Meijin program had prepared a special sacrifice attack in the middle game, which was very successful. Adding knowledge about good attacking formations and how to use them might be very interesting. Also, automatic preparation of the opening book might improve the programs considerably. Shotest already did that for this tournament by playing more than 40,000 games on 12 machines to automatically spot weaknesses in the opponent's piece development.

In his final speech, Shukan Shogi editor Kosaku even said that the programs might have improved by three handicap levels in the past year. This might be a little too much, but I have been closely following Shotest for two years now and I know that the program has improved a lot since last year. In last year's tournament I commented the games of Shotest without looking at the variations and evaluation it produced. This year I paid more attention after noticing a couple of times that Shotest evaluation and variations were more accurate than my own analysis. If a program that is so much better than last year can only manage to get the same result, this means that the other programs have improved a lot as well.

Last year I was a little pessimistic about the strength of the top programs. I am now pretty sure that strong amateur level is within reach of the current programming methods. It is unclear how far beyond that it is possible to go. Most of the top programmers do not want to make a prediction on the date when a computer program will beat the world champion or predict a date far into the future (I heard 2050 mentioned a couple of times). I am impressed with the improvement in playing strength every year. The CSA World Computer Championships is clearly pushing the programmers. How high will the bar be next year?
