My Background

February 6th 1967 Born in Monnickendam, The Netherlands
October 1972 Moved to Westzaan (also in the Netherlands) where my parents still live
August 1978 Entered "O.S.G. Rooswijk" high school
August 1984 Entered the Nijmegen University to study computer science.

Specialisations: compiler design, functional languages, databases and information systems, artificial intelligence and logic
September 1984 Started playing shogi at the Nijmegen Shogi club.
August 1986 European Champion Shogi (first time).
August 25th 1989 Graduated from the Nijmegen University.

Title master's thesis: Taking a RISC: the implementation of functional languages, a description of a compiler built for a functional language developed at the the faculty of natural sciences in Nijmegen.
September 1989 Started as a graduate student.

The research was done at the Nijmegen Institute of Cognitive science and Information technology (NICI), part of the university of Nijmegen. The goal of the research done during this period was to assess the feasibility of diagnostic techniques for electronic circuits to an informal psychological domain, specifically to the diagnostic domain of children having problems learning to read.
July 1990 First visit to Japan.
August 9th 1992 European Champion Shogi (second time).
June 1993 Second visit to Japan.

I was invited to play in the amateur Ryu-O tournament, where the strongest Japanese amateur players of each prefecture meet. Lost both games in the preliminaries.
March 7th 1994-February 3th 1995 Served as an officer in the Dutch army.
November 16th 1994 Received my Ph.D. in Cognitive Science.

Title of my Ph.D. thesis: Model-based diagnosis in the ill-defined domain of beginning reading.
August 27th 1995 European Champion Shogi (third time).
December 4th 1995 Started as an STA Fellow at the Electrotechnical Laboratory in Japan.

The research conducted here is aimed at human pattern recognition. As a sample domain Shogi is used.
October 1st 1997 Became a temporal ETL employee (three years).
June 27th-28th 1998 Invited to participate in the amateur Ryu-O tournament for the second time.

I managed to win one game against the representative from Okinawa. A report on this tournament can be found here
May 22nd 1999 Married Hiroko Tajima at the Meguro Gajoen in Tokyo.
April 1st 2001 Started as an associate professor at Saga University

I was a member of the First research group in the Department of Information Science
January 29th 2004 At 6:47 in the morning our daughter Lisa (2752 grams) was born.
March 31st 2004 Moved to Yonezawa to start as an associate professor at Yamagata University

I was a member of the Department of Informatics in the Faculty of Engineering
February 5th 2006 At 16:20 in the afternoon our second daughter Mai (3416 grams) was born.
April 1st 2009 Moved to Tokyo to work as a full professor at the Tokyo University of Technology
